Prokera® Amniotic Membrane Treatment in Wyoming, MI

Prokera® from BioTissue is a self-retaining biologic corneal bandage that combines cryopreserved amniotic membrane with an ophthalmic conformer. It is designed to support the cornea’s healing environment while helping manage inflammation and scarring on the ocular surface.

At Restoration Eye Care, Dr. Trevor A. Smith may recommend Prokera for selected patients with damaged or persistently inflamed corneal surfaces. Treatment is provided from our Wyoming, Michigan office for patients throughout Grand Rapids and West Michigan.

How Does Prokera Work?

The cryopreserved amniotic membrane used in Prokera has natural biologic properties that support epithelial healing and help reduce inflammation and scar formation. The membrane is held within a thin ring system that allows it to remain on the eye temporarily while the ocular surface heals.

When May Prokera Be Recommended?

Prokera may be considered for certain corneal and ocular surface conditions when the eye needs additional healing support. Depending on the individual case, this may include significant ocular surface inflammation, keratitis, persistent epithelial defects, corneal injury, or other conditions identified during an eye examination.

Not every dry eye or corneal condition requires an amniotic membrane. Dr. Smith will evaluate the cause and severity of your symptoms and explain whether Prokera, CAM360, or another treatment is the better fit.

What Should I Expect?

Prokera can be placed during an office visit. Because it functions as a temporary corneal bandage, patients may notice a foreign-body sensation or temporary visual blur while it is in place. How long it remains on the eye depends on the condition being treated and the healing response.

Follow-up is important so Dr. Smith can evaluate the ocular surface, monitor healing, and determine when the device should be removed.
